Howard R. Metz

CARPENDALE, WVA—Howard R. Metz, 36, of Carpendale, WVa., passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

Born in Cumberland, MD, on October 2, 1980, he was the son of Donna R. (Cadwalder) and Dennis K. Metz. Howard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leola and Robert Metz, and Norma and Harvey Cadwalder.

Howard enjoyed the outdoors; he was happiest when he was hiking in the woods. Howard was a kind spirit who would do anything in his power to assist other people. He had a heart of gold!

Howard is survived by his brothers, Dennis K. “Shorty” Metz and wife Brittany, Carpendale, and Will L. Metz and Tasha Shrout, Ft. Ashby; nieces, Karli Metz,  Embry Metz, and Hailey Shrout; nephews, Roan Metz and Blake White.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, on Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 5 to 6 p.m.

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home following the visitation.

Elizabeth Laura “Betty” Hammond

CUMBERLAND—Elizabeth Laura “Betty” Hammond, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at her home.

Born in Cumberland, MD on December 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frank Caspar and Agnes Anna (Barnes) Snyder. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband Conley Carl Hammond on March 9, 2004; four brothers, Vincent, James, Joseph, and George Snyder; two sisters, Rita C. Owens and Geraldine A. McNeill; half-brothers, Frank, Andrew, Thomas, Carl, and Robert Snyder and wife Mickey; and half-sister, Claire Schmitt.

Mrs. Hammond was a homemaker. During World War II, she was employed at the shipyards in Baltimore, and later she worked at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company. She was a 1941 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary 586, Senior Citizens Card Club, and a life member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Betty is survived by three daughters, Nancy Louise Hamilton and husband Robert, LaVale, Kathleen Marie Heinrich and husband Phil, Chantilly, VA, and Janet Elizabeth Dickey and husband Brian, Ellicott City; one son, Michael Andrew Hammond and wife Roberta, Cumberland; two brothers, Albert J. Snyder, Oldtown, and Gerald T. Snyder and wife Evelyn, Bel Air, MD; one sister, Josephine E. Frick, Cumberland; five granddaughters, Carrie Elizabeth Breakey and husband Matthew, Morgantown, WVa, Rachel Elizabeth Hager and husband Tate, Cumberland, Lt. Alicen May Heinrich, Fort Smith, Arkansas, Elizabeth Marie Dickey, and Erica Claire Dickey, both of Ellicott City; three grandsons, Robert Conley Hamilton and wife Kathryn, Chantilly, VA, Gary Laber and James Laber, both of Cumberland; three great-grandchildren, Hamilton David Breakey and Andrew Scott Breakey, Morgantown, WVa, and Elise Jean Hamilton, Chantilly, VA.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.  A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, October 24, 2016, at Our Lady of The Mountains, St. Mary’s at 10 a.m..

Interment will be at the Maryland State Veterans’ Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Hammond’s name to St. Mary’s Church, 300 E Oldtown Rd, Cumberland, MD 21502, or to the Western Maryland Health System Hospice Services, 1050 Industrial Blvd, Ste 19, Cumberland, MD 21502.

Carolyn J. (Friend) Gaus

CUMBERLAND- Carolyn J. (Friend) Gaus, 73, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday October 19, 2016 at the Golden Living Center.

Born July 25, 1943 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Hugh M. and Melda (Riffle) Friend.  She was also preceded in death by four brothers Hugh S. Friend, William H. Friend, James O. Friend, and Thomas L. Morrison.

Mrs. Gaus was a 1962 Graduate of Fort Hill High School and worked at the G.C. Murphy, Hills Department Store, and Barbara’s Hallmark Shop.  She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and in previous years at Calvary United Methodist Church and Christ United Methodist Church.  Through her years, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, sang in the choir, and served on many committees.
Surviving are her husband of over 50 years Edward E. Gaus of Cumberland; two sons Van E. Gaus and wife Cindy of Cumberland and Mark A. Gaus and wife Leslie of North Carolina; one sister Eileen Bridges and husband Wes; grandchildren Alexis and Dalton Gaus of Cumberland; and Emma, Lydia, and Jonah all of North Carolina; brother-in-law Steven Johnson and wife Beverly; sister-in-law Bonnie Nozzarella and husband Mario; three sisters-in-law Paula Friend, Ann Friend, Linda Friend all of Cumberland; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11:30 with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.  Friends will be received one-hour prior.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

The family would like to thank the staff and employees at the Golden Living Center, and Doctor Gupta and staff for their service.

Alvin Howard VanHouten

CUMBERLAND – Alvin Howard VanHouten, 75, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born on June 15, 1941, he was the son of the late Abner and Ruby Lee (Ingram) VanHouten. In addition to his parents, Alvin is also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Clarence VanHouten; and a daughter, Bobbie Ann Barb.

Alvin was born in Georgia, raised in Florida, lived in South Carolina, and moved to Cumberland in 2004. He enjoyed reading, fishing, old cars, flea markets, and was always great for making people laugh. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family.

Surviving Alvin are his daughters, Karen Albright and husband, Donnie, and Azolean Lee Jenkins and husband, Shawn; son, Tim VanHouten and wife, Gale; ex-wife, Kathleen; grandchildren, Mara, Monika, Miranda, Jimmy, Amy, Billy, Stefanie, Chloe, Xavier, Chianne, and Charee; and great-grandchildren, Jazzy, Brandon, Justin, Krystal, Lily, Dezaree, Blake, Daimen, Skylah, Chance, Dalton, Isis, Ivy, Kiah, and Jake.

Friends and family will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, following visitation, at the funeral home.

Deanna M. (Null) Snider

Cumberland – Deanna M. (Null) Snider went to be with the Lord after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer over several years. She passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016, at her home surrounded by family and friends during her final days.

She was preceded in death by her father, John F. Null and her mother, Isabelle (Wilson) Null. Deanna leaves behind her loving husband of 28 years, Allan Snider; her brother, Ron Null; sons, Darrin Wilt and wife Michelle, Aaron Wilt and wife Monica; grandchildren, Cierra, Aaron, Colby, Natalie, Logan, Adam, Laura, Christopher, Chachi and family, Andrew and family; and one great-grandson, Emmitt. She will be dearly missed by all her good friends and extended family.

Deanna was born in Cumberland, MD, on July 21, 1948. She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1966. She was employed at Curtis’ Confectionary, Peoples Drug Store, Brothers Four Restaurant, and Anton’s Restaurant following high school.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Friends and acquaintances knew her as a very generous and kind person, always willing to assist others in need. She is known regionally through various craft shows and charitable events as the “candy lady.” She specialized in holiday candies, ornate artisan chocolates, and many delectable recipes of her own creation. She was also an excellent baker of pies, cakes, and festive cookies. Everyday meals, as well as holiday feasts, were special events for family and friends. Guests were always welcome; no one left hungry.

She was a collector of various television and movie memorabilia. She had fan club correspondence with various celebrities of the 1960s. She was an avid Elvis fan. She had many of his recordings, photos, and several handwritten letters to her from “the King” during his early career. She named her second son “Aaron” – Elvis’ middle name.

The family extends special thanks to the Hospice services with WMHS in Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, October 27, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, October 28, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Raymond McCoy and Rev. Fred Iser officiating.

Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Cumberland.

Lisa Kay Flynn (Hawkins)

PINTO, MD – Lisa Kay Flynn (Hawkins), 50, of Pinto, MD, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016, at her residence.

Born July 14, 1966, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Harold C. Hawkins and the late Waneta C. (Shook) Hawkins.

Lisa was a Fort Hill High School graduate. She was a member of the Cresaptown Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries #2883. She worked as a restorative aid at Piney Valley – Stone Rise Healthcare in Keyser, WV. For most of her working life, she was a caregiver, and it was truly her passion to fill that role. She loved her job, but she loved her children and grandchildren even more. Any free time she had she devoted to her family. Lisa and her father were even reconstructing and painting a dollhouse for her granddaughters. Lisa was a very crafty woman and was always working on projects – wreaths, dollhouses, you name it.

Besides her father, Lisa leaves behind her daughters, Ekko McClung, Rawlings, and Ella Kerns and husband Zachari, Bowling Green; grandchildren, Darrin Collins, Jr., Landon Ridgeley, Preston Ridgeley, Cali Kerns, and Cami Kerns; brother, Troy Hawkins, Winchester; and pet companion, Willie.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, on Wednesday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 12 p.m. A private inurnment will take place on a later date at Biertown Cemetery.

Shirley Bernadette Teter

CUMBERLAND – Shirley Bernadette Teter, 82, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the Golden Living Center.

Born on May 5, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Angela A. (Winfield) and Clarence R. Rice. In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Solomon Teter; one daughter, Carolyn Keth; brother, Raymond Rice; older sister, Mary Swan; and younger sister, Sue Ann Rice.

Shirley was a dedicated wife and mother.  Her life exemplified Mother Teresa’s words that a “sacrifice, to be real, must cost, must hurt, and must empty ourselves.” Both she and her late husband Jacob, who served in the Air Force, sacrificed themselves extensively for family, neighbors, and country. In recognition of her service while her husband completed tours of duty in Vietnam for which he earned a Bronze Star, she received a presidential letter of commendation.

Surviving Shirley are her daughter, Vivian Elaine Teter, Norfolk, VA; son, Paul D. Teter and wife, Mary, Albany, GA; grandchildren, Jacob Teter and wife, Sandra, Tifton, GA, Jesse Teter, Albany, GA, Christopher Keth and wife, Heather, Salt Lake City, UT; and brother, Paul E. Rice and wife, Pat, of Cumberland.

Family and friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, October 27, 2016, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 28, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 201 N Centre St, Cumberland, at 10 a.m. with Father John Paul Kuzma, O.F.M., Cap. officiating.

Interment will be at the Maryland State Veterans’ Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

Michael Andrew “Gerber” Rice

RIDGELEY, WVA – Michael Andrew “Gerber” Rice, 65, of Ridgeley, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at his residence.

Born on August 12, 1951, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Mary (Cunningham) and Howard Thomas Rice. In addition to his parents, Michael is also preceded in death by his brother, Kurtis Rice.

Michael was a member of the Barrelville Outdoor Club, and the Cumberland Moose Lodge #271.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Saville) Rice; daughters, Kimberly Snyder and husband, Harvey, Newport, TN; sons, Randy Rice and wife, Charlene, Fort Mitchell, AL, Thomas Rice and wife, Rosalyn, Capon Bridge, WV, and Stephen Rice and girlfriend, Alex Kaminski, Layman, SC; step-daughter, Tasha Dietz and husband, Josh, Short Gap, WV; sisters Sharon Stafford, and Karen Sines, both of Charleston, SC; brothers, Stephen Rice, Richmond, VA, Pete Rice, Cresaptown, Wes Rice, Richmond, VA, Joe Rice, Mt. Savage; grandchildren, Ashley and Zachary Rice, Harrison Rice, James, Kaylee, Andrew, and Rebekah Snyder; and two step-grandchildren, Dakota and Kaden Dietz.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, there will be no formal visitation.

Dorothy Louise “Dottie” Kerr

CUMBERLAND – Dorothy Louise “Dottie” Kerr, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at her home.

Born in Cumberland on June 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Ethel (Nesbitt) and Edward Dawson. Dottie was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1942. Following high school, she attended business school. Dottie was employed at the Liberty Trust Company until her retirement. Dottie was a lifetime member of Centre Street United Methodist Church. She attended Bible study on Wednesday mornings at her church. She loved playing cards and visiting the Washington Street Library.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn D. Kerr; one daughter, Victoria S. Kerr; and three grandchildren, Catherine, Brittany, and William Kerr.

Dottie is survived by one son, Stephen E. Kerr and wife Sarah, Cumberland; granddaughter, Sarah Truslow and husband William, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Lilyana Truslow and William Truslow, Jr.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, October 28, from 4-6 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, October 29, at 1 p.m. Burial will take place in MD State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

Mary (McDonald) Kidwell

CUMBERLAND – Mary (McDonald) Kidwell, 86, of Cumberland, passed away October 26, 2016, at her residence.

Born September 17, 1930, in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Maurice J. McDonald and Catherine (Glavin) McDonald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Maurice McDonald; one nephew, Paul McDonald; one niece, Judy McDonald; and an uncle, Harry McDonald.

Mary was a devoted homemaker and wonderful mother to her two children.

She leaves behind her husband, Kenneth Kidwell; one daughter, Kathryn A. Kidwell, Cumberland; one son, Steven C. Kidwell, LaVale; and many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Mary’s wishes, she will be cremated.

A Memorial Mass will be held at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, October 29, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Gregory Chervenak, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant.

Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 716 Furnace Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.

Etta Lee Conley

Cresaptown—Etta Lee Conley,70, of Pinto Road, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016, at the Western Maryland Health System.

Born in Cumberland, MD on March 27, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Katherine (Longerbeam) and Paul Beveridge.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Phyllis.

Etta Lee was a graduate of Ursuline Academy class of 1964.  She was employed at Hercules as an explosive operator, and she had been employed at Howard Johnson Restaurant in LaVale. Etta Lee was also a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Carl K. Conley, and a son, Charles K. Thrasher; her special dogs Katie Bug, Maggie Su, and Bugsy Bear.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 10 a.m. until noon.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home, on Thursday, at noon.

Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Shirley Lee Frankenberry

RAWLINGS – Shirley Lee Frankenberry, 79, of Rawlings, received her Heavenly Reward Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born in Frostburg on August 6, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Lancaster) and LeRoy Wolford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Wolford; a sister, Lois Lewis; and two grandchildren, Carrie Frankenberry and Amanda Frankenberry.

Shirley was a graduate of Beall High School, class of 1955. Shirley was a homemaker and a mother. She was a founding member of First Pilgrim Holiness Church in Cresaptown in 1965, which became the first Wesleyan Church in Cresaptown in 1968.  She remained a founding member of the church until her death. Shirley served as Women’s Missionary president, youth leader, and worked with the Wesleyan Christian Academy. Shirley loved to open her home to visiting Pastors, Evangelists, and Missionaries throughout the years. She helped her husband pioneer and minister the Keyser Wesleyan Church in Keyser, WV, from 1972 to 1976. She was a faithful Christian since 1962 when she committed her life to serving the Lord. For the last 12 years, Shirley attended the Friends in Jesus Church in Cresaptown, where her son is the pastor.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 61 years, Howard B. Frankenberry; four sons, Barth H. Frankenberry Sr. and wife Donna K., Cresaptown, Steven M. Frankenberry and wife Donna J., Cresaptown, David J. Frankenberry and wife Lorinda, Florence, KY, and Daniel P. Frankenberry Sr. and wife Tammy, Wiley Ford, WV; grandchildren, Barth H. Frankenberry Jr. and wife Shannon, Benjamin H. Frankenberry, Destinee Frankenberry, Sonya Morgan and husband Chris, Amber Talley, Kyla Crouch and husband Ethan, Kaylen Frankenberry, Kourtlyn Frankenberry, Keshia Miller and husband Seth, Kristen Cary and husband Benjamin, and Daniel P. Frankenberry Jr.; great-grandchildren, Barth III, Samuel, Bryson, Trenton, Briah, Gage, Lilly, Alyvia, Ethan, Houston, Aleeah, Eli, and Levi; two sisters, Betty Scott and husband George, Frostburg, and Karen Fiorita and husband Herman, Frostburg.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, on Tuesday, November 1, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of her life will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 2, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Barth Frankenberry and a longtime family friend, Pastor David Paul. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour before the service. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Barth Frankenberry Jr., Barth Frankenberry III, Hank Hager, Christopher Morgan, Trenton Morgan, Daniel Frankenberry Jr., Seth Miller, and Ethan Crouch, Jr., and honorary pallbearer Benjamin Frankenberry.

Ray Ernest Frankenberry

CUMBERLAND – Ray Ernest Frankenberry, 92, went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2016, at the Lions Center, Cumberland, MD, where he had been a patient for a very short time.

Born on July 19, 1924, in Dutch Hollow, Mt. Savage, Ray was the son of the late Charles G. and Pearl E. Frankenberry. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Marian M. Frankenberry (March 17, 2016); eldest daughter, Carolyn Z. Frankenberry; brother, Clyde T. Frankenberry; sister-in-law, Annabelle Frankenberry; and brother-in-law, Clayton Robison.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving aboard the USS Biloxi in the Pacific Theater. He was a gunner aboard ship, and earned two Silver, and three Bronze Stars during the war. Ray was also the lightweight boxing champion on board. The USS Biloxi earned 9 battle stars while Ray was on board, of which he was very proud. Ray was a lifetime member of the VFW, Mt. Savage, MD.

A truck driver by trade, he was employed for many years by Clopper Oil Company, but also had prior jobs working for the former Homer and Hedrick Concrete Company, Maryland Mold and Foundry Company, as well as operated his own service station for a short time in Cresaptown, MD. He also worked for his son-in-law at Frostburg (Gulf) Chevron for ten years before finally retiring.

Surviving Ray are his daughters, Connie L. (Frankenberry) Brode, Cumberland, and Sherry S. Burkey and husband, Richard, LaVale; grandchildren, Gene Ray Furlow, Jenny R. Cessna, and Kelly L. Burkey; great-grandson, Coleton Furlow; sister, Eleanor L. Robison; and many nieces and nephews, whom he loves dearly. Ray also leaves behind two beloved cats, Idgett and Tank.

Friends and family will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown, on Sunday, October 30, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted, at the funeral home, on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Ron Welsh officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

Ronald Lynn Dicken

CUMBERLAND – Ronald Lynn Dicken, 52, of Cumberland, went to be with his Lord and Savior, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home, on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Ron fought a long, hard battle with cancer for over five years, and he will be greatly missed.

Born on September 2, 1964, in Cumberland, Ron was the son of the late Barbara Janette (Ambrose) and George Isaac Dicken. In addition to his parents, Ron is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Edith (Heaps) Ambrose, and Henry Ambrose.

Ron was a member of the United States Air Force, and he belonged to the Emmanuel Bethel United Methodist Church on Humbird Street.

Surviving Ron are his cousins and caregivers who loved him very much, Carol I. Burleson, Carpendale, WV, Nancy Billings, Edgewood, MD, and Carla Burleson, Cumberland; best friend/brother, Brian Newman, Eastern Shore; neighbor, loving friend, and helper, Calvin Swauger and family; and neighbor, Jay Armentrout, who helped keep his yard mowed.

There will be no formal visitation or funeral services. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A.

Marsha L. (Wentling) Thomas

CUMBERLAND— Marsha L. (Wentling) Thomas, 65, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born May 7, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Gardner LaMar and Esther Viola Wentling.

Marsha was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1969.  She then graduated from Catherman’s Business School with a degree as a Medical Secretary. She worked in that capacity for over thirty years, most notably for Drs. Himmelwright, Figueroa, and Ashker. She was a member of the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association, coordinating the South Cumberland Halloween parade for over 25 years. Methodist by faith, she was an active member of both Emmanuel United Methodist and Mt. Herman United Methodist Churches, being involved with the Sunday School Program, Vacation Bible School Program, and the United Methodist Women’s Group. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, and spending time with family— especially her two granddaughters.

Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Timothy B. Thomas; one son, Sean Thomas and wife, Kristie, Cumberland; two granddaughters, Kylie and Makinlie, both home with their parents; her mother-in-law, Betty Thomas; one sister, Diana Kline and husband, Jim, Smithville, AR; three nieces, Pam Johnson, Krista Schloo, and Kelli New; and one nephew, Todd Kline, and their families.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 1 from 2:00 until 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, November 2, at noon, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 24 Humbird St. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Entombment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Gene Combs, Greg Smith, Chuck Eberly, Brian Grim, Eugene Frazier and Steve Sensabaugh.

In honor of Marsha’s memory, contributions may be made to the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association for the Halloween Parade Fund. Checks should be written to SCBCA and mailed to Debbie Hidey, 1015 Kent Ave., Cumberland, MD.

The family would like to thank the staff of the 7 North Nursing Unit, and Drs. Lum, Zaman, Janjua, and Sprenkle for their excellent care over these last few weeks.

Goldie Lee Van Meter

RAWLINGS – Goldie Lee Van Meter, 91, of Rawlings, passed away Monday, October 31, 2016, at the home of her daughter, Marlenea.

Born in Rawlings on October 25, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Agnes (Thrasher) and Albert Lee Dawson. Goldie was also preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer Frederick Shuck and Stanley Lee Van Meter, and daughter-in-law, Loretta Shuck.

Goldie was employed at the Celanese Corporation in the coning department. Goldie was a member of the Rawlings United Methodist Church and the Cresaptown Eagles Auxiliary. Goldie was proud that she had taken a CPR and basic first aid course at the American Red Cross.

Goldie is survived by four children, Frederick M. “Rick” Shuck, Rawlings, Marlenea Miller and husband Richard, Green Spring, WV, Stanley L. “Junior” Van Meter, Jr. and wife Rebecca, Cumberland, and Leslie R. “Coke” Van Meter, Rawlings; and grandchildren, Carol A. Whetzel and husband Shawn, Keyser, Stephanie L. Adkins and husband Doug, South Boston, VA, Eric S. Miller and wife Leslie, Church Hill, MD, Jeremy L. Miller and wife Rachel, Easton, MD, Melissa Boober and husband David, Martinsburg, Christopher Van Meter, Keyser, Brad Van Meter and wife Debbie, Keyser, Leslie R. “Cokey” Van Meter, Jr., Keyser, Jodie Van Meter, Flintstone, Tiffany and Kaitlyn, Rawlings. Goldie is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a great-great-granddaughter, Sadie.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, on Thursday, November 3rd, from 4-7 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, November 4th, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Merle Correll officiating. Burial will take place in Biertown Cemetery, Rawlings. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Martin Harold “Marty” Cosgrove

CUMBERLAND – Martin Harold “Marty” Cosgrove, 93, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016.

Born November 3, 1922, he was the son of the late Wilbert M. Cosgrove and Millie A. Cosgrove.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bertha A. Cosgrove; and a sister in-law, Bonnie (Binnie) K. Macomber, of Indio, Calif.

Surviving are his two sons, Erick M. Cosgrove and wife Elizabeth of Johnson City, Tenn.; Kim L. Cosgrove and Vicki of Niles, OH; one sister, Ruby Wolford of Frostburg, MD; two nieces, Althea Mundeno and husband Robert of Cumberland, MD, and Phyllis Fisher of San Carlos, Calif; three grandchildren, Crystal Dockery of Brookwood, Ala., Derick M. Cosgrove of Abingdon, VA., Nikki M. Cosgrove of Niles, OH; and nine great-grandchildren.

Marty was a 1940 graduate of Beall High School. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in World War II, who was stationed in the Philippines and Hawaii.  He was a recipient of medals and ribbons including Good Conduct, Asiatic Pacific Theater, Philippine Liberation with Bronze Star, WWII Victory, and South Philippine Ryukyus.

Martin enjoyed playing golf with his friends, bowling on a bowling league, and playing the organ, guitar, and harmonica. He also dabbled in oil painting. Marty and his wife Bertha watched and cheered for their sports teams—the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins.

We all will miss him tremendously.

Ralph Mervin “Sugar Bear” Winters

CRESAPTOWN—Ralph Mervin “Sugar Bear” Winters, 66, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, October 30, 2016, at the Martinsburg Veterans Administration Hospital.

Born on January 10, 1950, in Cumberland, Sugar Bear was the son of the late Norma (Dawson) and Joseph Winters, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Christopher Winters; sister, Rosalie Chapman; and brother, Joseph Winters, Jr.

Sugar Bear was a graduate of Allegany High School, and he was a Vietnam Area Army Veteran. During his service to his country, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star, and the Medal of Valor. During the Viet Nam Conflict, he had carried two of his fellow soldiers to safety out of the jungle, saving their lives. Among his fellow soldiers, Sugar Bear was known for supplying comfort to two dying soldiers during that memorable night. He carried two dead comrades out of the jungle so that they could be returned home for burial.

Sugar Bear was a truck driver who was employed by Roadway Transportation Company. He enjoyed auto racing, and he attended every conceivable kind of automobile racing event. Sugar Bear was a member of the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department, and he was an avid Washington Redskins Fan.

Sugar Bear is survived by his son, Vincent W. Winters and wife Angela; brothers, Carl Winters, Ronnie Winters and wife, Sue, and Roger Winters and wife, Judith; sisters, Frances Becker and husband, David, Shirley Morgan, Dian Wilhelm-Reyes and husband, Carlos; sister-in-law, Judy Winters; grandchildren, Erik Winters and Rebecca Winters; two special ladies to whom he had been married, Sandy Knipple and Alice Winters.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 2 to 5 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Carlos and Dian Reyes officiating.

Burial will be in Maryland State Veterans’ Cemetery, Rocky Gap.  Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by Vietnam Veterans Chapter 172.

Those wishing to honor Sugar Bear’s memory may do so by making contributions to the Fort Hill High School Football Program.

Loretta Miltenberger

LAVALE – Loretta Miltenberger, 93, of LaVale passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Western Maryland Health System. Loretta had lived at the Lions Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past three years.

Born in Cumberland, MD on May 20, 1923, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian R. (Beck) Himmler. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Shawn D. Miltenberger; two sisters, Phyllis L. (Himmler) Rymer and husband Perry, and Jacqueline K. (Himmler) Hite and husband Dale; brother-in-law, Joseph C. Athey; niece, Debra Ann (Schrock) Ziler; and nephew, Noah F. Schrock.

Loretta was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1942. In high school, Loretta had played basketball for the Allegany High School girls’ basketball team. Following high school, Loretta attended Girl Central Business School. She had been employed at the ABL Laboratory, and she retired as a social worker from the State of Maryland Department of Social Services where she worked for over 20 years. Loretta attended St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a diehard San Antonio Spurs Fan.

Loretta is survived by two sons, David M. Miltenberger and wife Dianne (Fey), Cumberland and Mark S. Miltenberger and wife Karen (Mawhinney), Bel Air, Cumberland; grandchildren, Jason M. Miltenberger and wife Jennifer, Glen Burnie, Rebecca D. Miltenberger and fiancée Andrew Nelson, Washington, DC, Jennie E. (Miltenberger) Sefcik and husband Nicholas, Frederick, April Dawson and husband Robert, Oldtown, Edward Cook, III and Kristi, Cumberland, and Ashley Cook and LeRoy, Cumberland; great grandchildren, Miles Miltenberger, Camden Sefcik, Violet Sefcik, Hannah Dawson, Olivia Dawson, Liam Dawson, Mariah Cook, Kylie Cook, and Maddy Cook; sister, Billie Jean (Himmler) Athey, LaVale; nieces, Susan L. (Rymer) Michael and Herb Crawford, Arlene Schrock; nephews, Gary L. Rymer and wife Deborah, Stanley M. Ziler; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, on Monday, November 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M.

Funeral services will be conducted at St. John’s Lutheran Church on, 400 Arch Street, Cumberland, on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Stephen Yelovich officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Pall Bearers will be Jason Miltenberger, Andrew Nelson, Nicholas Sefcik, Stanley Ziler, Austin Michael, Logan Michael, Robert Dawson, and Herb Crawford.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Lions Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Western Maryland Health System for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Loretta.
