CUMBERLAND – Jack D. Rowan, 93, of Cumberland, died Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born September 4, 1923, in Cumberland, MD, where he lived his entire life, he was the son of the late James and Mary Beatrice (Ryan) Rowan.

Jack graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1941, lettering in track, and served in the US Army during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. When he returned home, he began working as a machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, from where he eventually retired.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois M. (Crabtree) Rowan; two brothers, James Franklin Rowan and Thomas Eugene Rowan; and two sisters, Frances Mahaney and Kathleen Sisk.

Jack was much beloved by his family and friends and loved spending time with them whenever possible. The annual Rowan Reunion was something he never missed. This year just won’t be the same without him there. Though he was not particularly computer savvy, he kept a Facebook account and learned to video chat so that he could talk to his great-grandchildren in New Jersey and watch them grow. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities whenever possible, trying to never miss a game or performance. Jack was an avid tennis player well into his late 80s and had a select group of tennis friends he was happy to meet up with several times a week. He also enjoyed bowling and belonged to a duck pin bowling league where he and his team won a championship just a few years ago. Golfing, travel, maintaining his yard and home and woodworking were also hobbies. Several family members have treasured pieces of furniture crafted by Jack. He was a lifelong Harley Davidson enthusiast, only giving up his Harley when his wife insisted after his first daughter was born. If it had been up to him, he would still have one. He also had a particular fondness for Saab automobiles, his first being a three cylinder with a pull handled starter. Though Jack was afraid of heights, he was also determined to fly. He took flying lessons and soloed at the Mexico Farms air field where he bought and kept his small two seater Aeronca airplane. He loved that plane and flying.

Jack’s survivors include his two daughters, Nancy Lockard and her husband, Michael of Rockville, MD and Betsy Eastham of Cumberland; his grandchildren, Nathaniel Lockard and his wife, Meghan of Ramsey, NJ, Matthew Lockard of Bethesda, MD, Sarah Eastham and her husband, Jeffrey Furis of Pittsburgh, PA, Amanda Eastham of Cumberland, MD and Joanna Eastham and her husband, Jonathan Treece of Cumberland, MD; and his adored great-grandchildren, Emmerson (Emme) Lockard, Asher Lockard and Everett Lockard, all of Ramsey, NJ. Jack is also survived by one sister, Mary Shepherd of Cumberland, MD; four sisters-in-law, Frances Rowan of Cumberland, MD, Sandy Rowan of Columbia, MD, Faye Nixon of WV and Beulah Crabtree of Oakland, MD and many nieces and nephews.
